Victims, losses and causes of the earthquake in Morocco

 At 11:16 p.m. local time on Friday, September 9, 2023, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the Ahouzaz region in southern Morocco, causing significant human and material losses.


Residents of many areas of Morocco felt the earthquake, including the capital, Rabat, and Casablanca, as well as residents of areas in Algeria and Tunisia.


According to the latest official figures, the earthquake left 296 dead and 153 injured, and also caused extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure in the affected areas.


The city of Ifrane was one of the most affected cities by the earthquake, with a death toll of over 100, and the city also suffered extensive damage to historic and heritage buildings.


The Moroccan authorities declared a state of emergency in the affected areas, and rescue and relief teams headed to the affected areas to assist in search and rescue operations.


Many Arab and foreign countries have contributed humanitarian aid to Morocco, including the United States, France, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.


The Moroccan earthquake comes 19 years after the Al Hoceima earthquake that struck Morocco in 2004, leaving more than 600 dead.


The Earthquake Is the Result of African Plate Activity


Morocco is located in an area with high seismic activity, as it is located at the junction of the African Plate and the Eurasian Plate.


The activity of the African Plate has caused many earthquakes in Morocco throughout history, including the 1960 Agadir earthquake that left over 15,000 dead.


The Moroccan authorities are working to develop earthquake prevention measures, including strengthening buildings and raising awareness among residents of the risks of earthquakes.


Major Human and Material Losses


The Moroccan earthquake caused major human and material losses, killing over 296 people and injuring over 153 people.


The earthquake also caused extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure in the affected areas, destroying many residential buildings, schools, and hospitals.

Many countries have also provided financial assistance to the Moroccan government to help those affected by the earthquake.
