Football fans in the West Asia region are eagerly awaiting the announcement of the winner of the region's best player award for August. The past month saw fierce competition between a number of outstanding players, including Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo, a player for Saudi club Al-Nasr.


Ronaldo in the lead


Ronaldo continued to deliver great performances with Al-Nasr, scoring five goals in four games in all competitions. Ronaldo helped Al-Nasr win the AFC Champions League title, and he also scored a goal in Portugal's win over the Czech Republic in World Cup qualifying.

Ronaldo's goals in August came in some very important matches, as he scored one in Al-Nasr's 2-1 win over Al-Hilal in the Riyadh derby, and one in Al-Nasr's 2-1 win over Pakhtakor in the second leg of the AFC Champions League semi-final.


Al-Owaidah shines with Al-Wehdat


Among Ronaldo's rivals, Jordanian player Anas Al-Owaidah, a player for Jordanian club Al-Wehdat, stood out. Al-Owaidah scored four goals in four games with Al-Wehdat, and he also led the team to victory in the Jordanian Super Cup.

Al-Owaidah's goals in August came in some tough matches, as he scored one in Al-Wehdat's 2-1 win over Al-Faisaly, one in Al-Wehdat's 2-1 win over Shabab Al-Ordon, and two in Al-Wehdat's 2-1 win over Al-Jazeera.

The list of nominees for the West Asia Player of the Month award for August includes a number of outstanding players, including:


Hussein Al-Dakhili (Al-Hilal, Saudi Arabia)

Ali Mabkhout (Al-Jazira, United Arab Emirates)

Omar Al-Somah (Al-Ahly, Saudi Arabia)

Mohamed Salah (Al-Ahly, Egypt)

Mohamed Abdel-Shafy (Zamalek, Egypt)


Expectations


It is expected that the competition for the award will be very strong, as the list includes a group of outstanding players.  


Ronaldo the top contender


Ronaldo is the top contender to win the award, thanks to his record-breaking numbers with Al-Nasr and the Portuguese national team. Ronaldo has scored 13 goals in 10 games with Al-Nasr in all competitions, and he also scored 12 goals in 14 games with the Portuguese national team in all competitions.


Al-Owaidah makes his mark


Al-Owaidah is also a strong contender, thanks to his decisive goals with Al-Wehdat. Al-Owaidah has scored 10 goals in 12 games with Al-Wehdat in all competitions.


Final decision


The winner of the award will be announced at the AFC Football Awards ceremony in December 2023.
